CMake also checks whether the requested compiler is Clang which is not done by the autotools script. It can also fail 
based on certain strings in the cc output (besides just checking for a non-zero status code).

For now I think you have to add a check clang too before setting the flag.

I'm assuming the configure script is not performing this test correctly

on your colleague's machine. Checking config.log for clues might be
helpful.
