The common solution is to call register_init_routine() to register a routine that is called whenever the dissector should be reinitialized.
This is more along the lines of what I was looking for, and will be useful in the future I'm sure. But for now, the binary tree method works wonders and made my code much cleaner in the process. :) Thank you for your input!
