Apparently it was my shell (tcsh).  Bash shows freebsd 4.6-prelease as
follows:

$ ls -la /usr/local/bin/procmail
-rwsr-sr-x  1 root  mail  66612 Apr 25 22:54 /usr/local/bin/procmail
$ /usr/local/bin/procmail `perl -e '{print "A"x10240}'`=A
Segmentation fault
$ /usr/local/bin/procmail -v
procmail v3.22 2001/09/10
