I misread an earlier post and tried ftp://1.2.3.4/.#./ instead of ftp://1.2.3.4//.#./ which DOES crash IE for me.

just a note...

it does not crash IE 5.5 running on a Windows 95 machine...  in fact, it just returns a server not found error, and 
changes the string you typed in to /#./ instead of /.#./
