How to activate Snort as IPS and other question

May I know how to activate Snort as IPS mode? I only able to activate the IDS mode. Besides, what are the detailed 
logs? I have used alert.fast and tcpdump log to view my network traffic, sometimes if necessary alert.full? Is there 
other log that is necessary for me to consider? Thanks.
