Is it possible to force snort to start using a predefined PID? I would like to use a script to monitor the snort PID.
Or would I have to use the script to look in /var/run/snort_eth1.pid and verify the id in this file is running?

you can't force a certain PID... they are assigned by the system when the apps
execute... you do have to read the snort pid file and use the number in there...
