Sure sorry about being so selfish.

The issue was that I downloaded the source files on windows and extracted
them using winRAR. Then copied the folders using winSCP to the RHEL 5
system. Compiling the source files copied in this manner threw up a lot of
errors. Also I used a folder name with a space in between which again
caused additional errors.

So copied the .tar.gz files into the RHEL 5 and then extracted them and
them compiled them on RHEL5. All the dependencies were installed just fine
after that.
