Multiple pattern search engines

Hello,
I know that snort is using a search engine, which is based on DFA for the
pattern matching procedure.
In addition, it seems like not all patterns  are compiled into the same DFA.
Is that true?
How are the patterns divided into different groups?
How many groups there are?
