Re: Snort 2.9.0 packages for RHEL?

RedHat's support for RHEL has reached the shameful level. Add to this the gnome failures for Fedora and it looks to this observer that they are headed downhill. (In case you didn't know - gnome on Fedora won't permit mods to the login screen; it shows ALL usernames at uid 500 and above and can't be made not to, thus making it unusable for anything but casual use.) I converted from Solaris to RHEL because I could never get an out-of-the-box build/install of Snort to work anymore on Solaris. Now I have the same issue with RHEL. Those little tufts on my office floor are from the hair on my head. Trying a beta of RHEL 6 now to see if it might work. -- Shane Castle Data Security Mgr, Boulder County IT CISSP GSEC GCIH -----Original Message----- From: Ryan Jordan [mailto:ryan.jordan () sourcefire com] Sent: Monday, October 18, 2010 10:08 To: Olivier Bilodeau Cc: snort-users () lists sourceforge net Subject: Re: [Snort-users] Snort 2.9.0 packages for RHEL? Hi, Do you guys plan to release RPMs for snort 2.9.0 on RedHat Enterprise Linux 5.0?
No. Snort 2.9.0 and the DAQ library rely on libpcap version 1.0 or above, but RHEL 5 only supplies libpcap 0.9. As a result, we are unable to provide RPMs that will install on RHEL 5. Red Hat's "rawhide" distribution contains libpcap 1.0, so I would expect this problem to be solved when RHEL 6 is released.
If not, is there something in your modified GPL license that would prevent us from hosting a yum repo for that?
Snort is still GPL, you can modify and redistribute to your heart's content. You will also need to repackage libpcap 1.0+ for RHEL 5, hopefully in such a way that it doesn't break apps which depend on libpcap 0.9. -Ryan ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------ Download new Adobe(R) Flash(R) Builder(TM) 4 The new Adobe(R) Flex(R) 4 and Flash(R) Builder(TM) 4 (formerly Flex(R) Builder(TM)) enable the development of rich applications that run across multiple browsers and platforms.
