If you start snort as root and then change uid and gid, you'll get this
error when 'snort -D' is shutting down:

"Could not remove pid file /var/run//snort_eth0.pid: Permission denied"



If you also chroot your environment, the error message read:

"Could not remove pid file /var/run//snort_eth0.pid: No such file"


In both cases, the old file(s) remain in the filesystem after the process
has died.
