I think you guys should take a leaf out of the clamAV product (which you
own!) and invent an official update daemon (like freshclam). As with
clamAV, use DNS (with short-but-non-zero TTLs) to notify the daemon of
version numbers, and the damn daemons can happily check every minute if
they wish - it won't trigger downloads until there is something new to
download.

No point in reinventing the wheel here...
