error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'

I just installed and started snort 2.8.3.1 on Debian and now i was following
the guide:

First set the mysql root password by doing this command:
# mysqladmin -u root password "mypassword"
Then get into the mysql command prompt:
# mysql -u root -p (then enter your password "mypassword" to get the prompt)

But, i type:

SAT:/usr/src/snort-2.8.3.1# mysqladmin -u root password "psswd"

and:

mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'

What i should do?
