Snort set up for DoS/DDoS

Hi everybody

I have  a very important project in which i need to setup Snort as alerter for Denial of Service/ distributed Denial of 
service attacks. I donot know how effective is snort for that. If it is effective can somebody guide what i need to do 
for that. If it is not effective , how to fine tune it to make it recognize those attacks.
