What is the difference between snortrules-snapshot-CURRENT.tar.gz and snortrules-snapshot-2_1.tar.gz rules?

This is explained at the top of the page:
http://www.snort.org/dl/rules/

snortrules-snapshot-2_1.tar.gz is for users of snort 2.1.x

snortrules-snapshot-CURRENT is for users of the snort CURRENT branch development code.

Pick the one that matches your snort version you are using.

Please note that CURRENT is a development snapshot version of snort, and is not the same as the "current released version". It's usually a working release, but prone to occasional instability, inability to compile, new undocumented features, etc. It's fun to play with, but be wary that you're playing in a construction zone when you use it.

the CURRENT snort snapshot comes from this page:
http://www.snort.org/dl/snapshots/
