Thanks to all of you who replied - your information was most helpful. I
understand now how to set up Snort to run as a non-root user. The
following works:

  snort -u bob -dev -l /home/bob/log

It's funny that the Snort users manual makes no mention of this issue. I
think I will write the authors and suggest that it be included.
