Rather then using the command 'touch /var/log/snort/alert' to put
it back, just leave it gone and -HUP the snort process.  Also, if
you are using logrotate be sure to add the copytruncate option
before HUP'ing snort.

Yes Snort does have permissions...nothing really changed. I've been doing some further research and it seems once you 
delete the alert file Snort no longer will right to the file any longer. Can anybody verify this? I find that hard to 
believe there isn't a configuration somewhere.
