It had been a minute since the last time that I installed snort via RPM.
So I went to www.snort.org/dl/binaries/linux 
grabbed snort-mysql-2.1.1-1.i386.rpm and then found that it required
snort-2.1.1-1.i386.rpm and was built against the older version of
(3.23.56) of MySQL-shared.

It would be helpful to have an "instructions" link on 
www.snort.org/dl/binaries/linux page
