What distro are u running?
most of this is covered in the manual....

In debian I use apt-get or dpkg
In Mandrake I use rpm or urpmi or the package manager
In Redhat I use the same as above pretty much
In FreeBSD I use pkg_add (pkg_*)
Don't have windoze

My preferred way is to compile source, and upgrade that way,
