9 times out of 10, you don't need any verbose modes per-se... just start 
snort without putting it in daemon mode (ie: no -d switch)...

The console output should explain the failure before dumping you back to 
the prompt.

If you need snort to be verbose, add -v to the command line.

I don't think strace will be useful for this problem.. strace will dump all 
the system calls snort makes, and is generally better used to figure out 
what system call snort is making when it dies. It's not very useful for 
debuging config file syntax errors.
