acid, postgres and freebsd

I am trying to optimize my setup as follows

PostgreSQL 7.2 running on FreeBSD 4.6
ACID latest running on Redhat Linux

I am having issues with ACID taking a long time to process alerts, has
anyone ran this setup and was able to customize it to run faster? I can
have only one user at a time access the alerts. When another person
try's it bogs the other user and acid crawls.
