The most common problem with this is that you don't have the correct
permissions set on the user that snort is trying to use to insert into the
DB.  Try using the MySQL command line tool to see if you can connect:

        mysql -h <host> -u <user> -p

Then see if you can do an insert into a snort table.  That's usually the
issue.
