Understanding PORTSCAN DETECTED vs. portscan status

I'm having some problems understanding spp_portscan messages. The two lines below illustrate two different messages: spp_portscan: PORTSCAN DETECTED from MY.NET.201.42 (THRESHOLD 4 connections exceeded in 1 seconds) [**] spp_portscan: portscan status from MY.NET.206.114: 14 connections across 14 hosts: TCP(0), UDP(14) [**] In one case, the message contains "PORTSCAN DETECTED", the other has "portscan status" - what is being communicated here with these two different messages? I'm new to snort, and am currently taking a class that discusses network security. If anyone can point me in the direction of some reading material that explains issues like the one above it would be appreciated. Tom. ------------------- I've stopped 50 spam messages. You can too!
