We have the Symantec anti-virus gateway checking all incoming and outgoing emails for viruses. It does a wonderful job of checking emails for viruses but it can't stop a virus outbreak from entering the network. It deals with it after it has already entered our system. If snort was configured with a way to respond to a virus attack, you could stop the flow from the infected source but you would also be stopping legitimate emails from the same server. The latest version of Symantec has a virus outbreak notification feature that will email you if the number of viruses reaches a certain threshold. You can then decide what action, if any, to take. I have disabled all of the virus rules on snort because I feel that the anti-virus gateway does a much better job of handling the situation.

I read the thread "Anti Virus on Linux" on this group recently where a number of anti-virus software recommendations were made. Naive question. What's the difference between what Snort does with rule matching vs. what an anti-virus gateway (ala Symantec & McAfee) does with virus signature matching? I suspect Snort doesn't do MIME extraction, decoding & decompression, but what are the other differences? Are they complementary? _______________________________________________ Join Excite! - http://www.excite.com The most personalized portal on the Web! ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: SlickEdit Inc.
