Sure.

First, backup your existing binary and conf files.  Something like:

# tar cfvzp working-snort.tar.gz /etc/snort /usr/local/bin/snort

Unpack the lastest tarball and go to work:

# tar xfvz snort-1.9.0.tar.gz
# cd snort-1.9.0
# ./configure --help
# ./configure --with-mysql --enable-flexresp
# make
# make install

Tweak your rules to start resping.
