You're using RedHat, right?  Do this as root:
# slocate -u
# slocate php.ini

It *should* be in /etc/php.ini, but there must be a php.ini file
somewhere since you've installed php.  It might be php.ini.sample

i've installed the two mod_php packages (for 3 and 4), and i've done a
regular search for a php.ini file, but i don't seem to have one.

what do i do to get one?
