Snort error

I get this error when trying to run snort. I am trying to run version 1.9.0 on a FreeBSD box.

Error:Unable to open rules file: /root/.snortrc or /root/ /root/.snortrc 
Fatal Error,Quitting

Any help would be appreciated.
