Upgrade smoothwall to 1.9

I am running smoothwall with snort 1.8.
I would like to upgrade it to 1.9, but have 1 problem.
smoothwall does not come with make, gcc or other compilers.
I have a redhat8 box on the lan also, can I do a ./configure --target smoothwall ?
or ./configure --target 192.168.0.2 user name : user.....
So my question is can I do a ./configure, make, make install across a lan using what 
?
