Re

i set these options already before.. but doesn't work also (check in registry the settings also).

- Same folder: noticed also already that this is problem, but that's not my problem
- It is the service version of StdDB
- i kept the path names short (for ex. "C:\Snort" and not "C:\programme\snort", to avoid possible problems with 8 char long strings.. but it's not really necessary i think in service mode, also spaces in the pathname shoudn't not be a problem for the service mode, because the names are taken from the registry)

I tested this on W2k and an XP host.. a friend of mine got error 202.. i only get error 2.. (getlasterror message):
[SNORT_SERVICE] StartServiceCtrlDispatcher error = 2
Fatal Error, Quitting..

Starting the service from the System services dialog of windows doesn't work too (Service is *installed* correctly)..
Does the service mode work in fact? Strange thing.

Regards & thanks for reply!

Ueli,

Try:

Snort /SERVICE /INSTALL -c c:\snort\snort.conf -l c:\snort\log

Make SURE you are in the same folder as snort when you execute the
command for service. You can add your switches in back of the -c switch
and change the path statements to whatever you need :)

Also make SURE you are using the version of Snort that has the Service
option built in. There are two versions (With and Without service) of
each.

Subject: Snort /SERVICE parameter (Win32)

Hello

i'm having some problems to use Snort option /SERVICE .. for example:

C:\SNORT>snort /SERVICE -D
[SNORT_SERVICE] StartServiceCtrlDispatcher error = 2
Fatal Error, Quitting..

I added Snort service support to IDScenter (and Snort 1.9 support, Autoblock plugin support.. a really nice rule editor..), but Snort /SERVICE option seem to cause a problem
here on my computer. Any advice/reason why?
