Where is the $RULE_PATH been assigned value?

i 've installed the snort1.90 on my linux system
I found a $RULE_PATH env variable in snort.conf file.
And i want to know if i need assign a path to it?
Such as /usr/local/lib/snort-1.9.0/rules?
