Bill, just for laughs.. Try putting a symlink here:

/usr/local/mysql/include/mysql/mysql.h and see what happens

Ok, i have tried this with both 1.8.7 and 1.9.0beta6.  It doesnt work with
either.  I'm still getting the 'cant find mysql.h' error.  Anyone have
another idea?
