I use it and I've had that problem as well long ago. I'm using this version:
 
$Id: snort_stat.pl,v 1.15.2.5 2001/08/17 04:03:53 yenming Exp $
# $Revision: 1.15.2.5 $

Make sure you are using a recent version. Also I used to have problems
depending on what type of logging I was using (FAST or FULL). The author is
very helpful with these problems. His info from the snort_stat.pl file:

# $Author: yenming $
# Yen-Ming Chen, <chenym () ALUMNI CMU EDU>
# $Date: 2001/08/17 04:03:53 $

has anyone had any experience using snort_stat.pl?  I grabbed a copy off of
whitehats.com, and for some reason when I run it, i get no data in the
output, just the format template.  i run it exactly the way its listed in
the usage part of the script:

cat alert | snort-stat.pl -a(for alert files)
