Snort 99% cpu utilization and no process activity

I have snort version 1.8.4-beta1 (Build 91) running on
various Linux Boxes (RH 7.1, 7.2). It was the current
snort-stable download at the time I downloaded it.

I am experiencing a problem where intermittantly one
or more of the boxes will stop logging to the alert
file, and will run at 99% cpu utilization. Running
strace on the process reveals no system calls or
anything whatsoever (the strace output file shows 0
bytes). Running strace on another process shows normal
calls and activity.

Anybody seen this before? Is this related to a bug in
this version of the software or other factors?

Any ideas would be appreciated.
