Seeking Help Snort/Mysql/MySql.sock

Running Linux 7.1. Having difficulties with Mysql.
Mysql seems to start fine. However, I cannot connect
to the database using ./mysql
The following error occurs:

ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server
through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (111)

Looking in that directory there is a mysql.sock
present. I am puzzled.
