Depending on your OS, you may get a console alert that the link is down.
Have you tried it?

Subject: [Snort-users] Detecting traffic from a Nic without an IP address

Hello,

I have a question regarding the use of snort with a NIC that does not have
an IP address (stealth mode). Is there a way to detect whether or not
that
card is receiving traffic? My concern is if someone inadvertently unplugs
the cable, can a notification be sent to warn that the NIC has lost
connectivity.

Thank you,
Mike
