Brent,
        Although I'm a newbie myself, I found that on www.snort.org , the link for
writing rulsets also had a good introduction to snort in general. I found it
very helpful (but a little hard to find) JMHO.
        If you have trouble finding it let me know and i'll elaborate.

Im running snort 1.7 on my 4.3 FreeBSD box...i downloaded the 1.7 ruleset
from snort.org .. im  running it as a NIDS ....it fired with up no problem
however i went to test it by portscanning the box with nmap from another BSD
box ...and i didnt recieve and alerts or anything in my system mail ...( i
also use logcheck )  or in /var/log/snort.log .....no alerts....
nothing...am i missing something ??  is there a good howto on getting snort
configured correctly ?? any help is greatly appreciated.
