Fatal Error OpenLogFile

What should the permissions and owner/group of the /var/log/snort directory?

If keep getting FATAL ERROR: ERROR: OpenLogFile() =>
mkdir(/var/log/snort/xx.xxx.xxx.xx) log directory: Permission denied and
then snort dies.
