Compiling libpcap (rank newbie)

I'm trying to compile libpcap for a generic BSD on a Linux box, but I'm
having a bit of trouble figuring out the options I should use with configure.
I've tried running ./configure --with-pcap=BSD, etc, but always get errors
similar to: 

make: *** No rule to make target `pcap-BSD.c', needed by `pcap-BSD.o'.  Stop.
 
Which options should I use?
 
I also need to figure out what files will need to be moved over to the target
box.  Unfortunately, I can't just compile on that box as configure can't
determine the correct type. If this works though, I should at least have
libpcap on SCO. Then you can read my newbie questions on compiling snort on
SCO.
