Upgrading snort?

What is the recommended way to upgrade snort from V 1.7 to V 1.8.1?

Do you uninstall from the 1.7 make dir and then install from the 1.8.1
make dir or do you just dump the new stuff over the top?  Or, some
unknown (as of yet) option three?
