Need Help

Hi ,
I am a very new user
I am usiing snort on W2Kpro
snort1,6,3
xato
I configure the rules files
but it never capture the port scan or anything else
when I want to look at the alert fileit gives me "the alert file is
corrupted, Do u want to make a new one?"
what is the wrong thing I do?
Could u help me?
