This is rich. Schools have been installing cameras and video
recording systems for decades to catch children doing something wrong.
They think this is appropriate use of technology and defend it to the
death. But when the price comes down far enough that children can use
it to catch teachers and administrators doing bad things -- then it's
time to ban the technology. No, not the surveillance cameras
installed by the schools! Only the handheld cameras used by the
students.

David Brin wrote a book, The Transparent Society, about this
fundamental question: As cameras become ubiquitous, who gets to watch
whom? Brin argues that one of the few ways to avoid a totalitarian
outcome is if EVERYBODY gets to watch EVERYBODY. The hatred of most
current power structures for this idea testifies to its power to make
us all equals: students and teachers, administrators and citizens.

I do not argue for Brin's thesis, though I think it deserves study. I
do believe that the school district should not be surveilling or
recording students if they cannot surveil and record the schools.

Declan:
Apparently, at least some of the little miscreants that "caught" their
teacher's
rant on videotape were stupid enough to post that video to the same website
they posted their Christmas vandalism spree on; " A Pure Ownage Christmas",
in which they destroyed the lawn decorations of various people.
Three of them, one 18 and two 17 year-olds, each have four charges pending
from the Christmas tape.

Declan,

I've thought about this situation in terms of the FOIA.

As an on/off again Jersey taxpayer, I believe that I have a right to a reasonable transcript of the proceedings of public classrooms in the state. It seems to me that a logical extension of this is a classroom student taking a transcript or a video of what happens there.

FOIA exceptions are usually few and far between but reasonable exceptions are expected (like exceptions regarding student results/data, tests before they are presented, transcripts during test times et cetera.)

The teacher is a government employee, they should expect their workplace monitored by taxpayers. If that comes in the form of a student videotaping them on a camera phone, then so be it.

James

We as a Board of Education wish to stick our heads in the sand, ignore the
new era being ushered in, and do everything in our power to avoid the
risk of being confronted with evidence of misconduct by our employees that
cannot be ignored.

I remember a few maladjusted teachers back in my day. Why this character
still has a job and/or isn't being sued I really don't understand.

People teaching our kids SHOULD be videoed - every MINUTE.
