Peterson bill would set up livestock tracking system

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Tracking cattle as they move across the country would 
be made easier under a bill proposed Tuesday by Rep. Collin Peterson, D-Minn.

The bill, introduced by Peterson and 11 cosponsors, would establish a 
national animal identification tracking system. It would allow the 
Department of Agriculture to better trace and quarantine livestock infected 
with highly contagious diseases, such as mad cow disease.

Peterson said the system is necessary to protect the health of citizens, 
and to protect U.S. trade abroad, where the safety of American beef is 
being questioned.

However, some cattle producers are apprehensive and want any nationwide 
system to be run by a private company so data cannot be used to hold cattle 
producers liable for any health problems.

"There are a lot of questions about if it could ever be used for 
prosecuting an individual," said Steve Brake, president of the Minnesota 
State Cattlemen's Association.
