Oakland to be first U.S. airport to use face-recognition ID system

Oakland International Airport announced Wednesday it will become the first airport in the country to use face-recognition technology, capturing the contours of travelers' eye sockets and nose curvatures on film, then comparing the images to a law enforcement database.

Despite concerns from civil liberties experts that the technology can be fraught with inaccuracy, the Oakland Police Department has used the biometric facial ID technology for the past year.

The rest of the police departments in Alameda County are expected to soon begin using the technology while booking alleged criminals. The system costs from $30,000 to $150,000 per police department, officials said.

Airports such as Canada's Pearson International Airport in Toronto and Keflavik International Airport in Iceland already employ the facial recognition technology. And at least two companies say they will be installing scanning cameras in other major U.S. airports in coming weeks.
