Subject: Opportunities for open testimony to NRC project on tools and
        strategies for protecting kids from Internet pornography ...

PLEASE CIRCULATE WIDELY

To whom it may concern:

At the request of the U.S. Congress, the National Research Council (NRC) of the
National Academies (which include the National Academy of Sciences, the National
Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine) is conducting a study on
tools and strategies for protecting kids from pornography and their
applicability to other inappropriate material on the Internet. (More
information on the project is available at <http://www.itasnrc.org>.)

In order to obtain input from a diversity of sources, the responsible committee
is conducting a number of site visits and regional meetings to solicit broad
input.

Regional meetings are opportunities for committee members to receive open
testimony from interested parties in person who are unable to appear in
Washington D.C.

Site visits are opportunities for committee members to examine organizations and
communities that have developed approaches to the problem of protecting kids
from pornography and other inappropriate Internet content. The intent for these
site visits would be to learn from these organizations and communities what has
worked well, what has worked less well, and the lessons that their efforts have
for other organizations and communities.

Every regional meeting and site visit will be attended by at least two committee
members and one professional NRC staff member. In addition, every meeting will
provide the opportunity for open testimony from members of the interested public
on a time-and-space-available basis.

Regional meetings and site visits will be held in the following locations and on
the following dates.

* Austin, TX, April 3-4, 2001
* Greenville, SC, April 17-18, 2001
* Kansas City, MO April 25-26, 2001
* Salt Lake City, UT April 26-27, 2001
* San Diego, CA  May 2-3, 2001
* Blacksburg/Roanoke, VA May 8-9, 2001
* Miami, FL, dates to be determined

Specific locations for open testimony and agendas for each regional meeting/site
visit are available on the project website or by going to this URL:
