Subject: Borders Books kills face-scanning plan amid criticism
Date: Tue, 28 Aug 2001 13:33:35 -0400

Declan:

It may be interesting for Politechnicals to note that Borders Books in London has suspended a face-scanning security program pending review of privacy concerns. This private-sector entity, which can get walloped if it offends consumers, is doing much better than the many government jurisdictions that are implementing face-scanning and other surveillance oblivious to privacy concerns.

Book shoppers in London can breathe easier: Big Brother isn't lurking between the shelves. Not yet,
                   anyway.

Bookstore chain Borders Group Inc. has temporarily
suspended a trial plan to implement FaceIt face
recognition software in two stores in the city, pending
a review of legal and human rights issues,
                   spokeswoman Jenny Carlen said.
