   Online Presidential Debates Need Work

Yesterday we received a press release about the "first ever
online presidential debate to be held on the Web White &
Blue 2000 network beginning today and continuing through Election
Day." It's at webwhiteblue.org, a Markle Foundation project, and is
also being carried by news sites like nytimes.com, cnn.com, and
washingtonpost.com. Now, we know that Tuesday's meatspace debate
promises to be less than exciting, but it'll be a nonstop
nerve-jangler compared to this sad dog. Not only did George W. and Al
Jr. submit just boilerplate press releases, but the Markle folks
couldn't even persuade the desperate-for-publicity Ralph Nader, Pat
Buchanan, Harry Browne, or John Hagelin campaigns to show up. And as
of Monday morning, the debate hadn't been updated from 24 hours
before. Yet George W. inadvisedly calls it "an example of what the
future holds for campaigning." Go figure. (Press release follows.)

GOPers Love Cash, Dems Want a Free Ride

Are political stereotypes true online? If you believe a new
report by Media Metrix, the answer is yes. They found that
Republicans spend most of their time watching their investments
while Democrats flock to the freebie sites. "You don't want to be the
one to reinforce a stereotype, but that's what the data show," Media
Metrix analyst Anne Rickert confided to ZDNet. It might be a new
economy, but some things never change.
