Just an announcement that may be of interest to this group. Congressman Asa
Hutchinson, a conservative Republican from Arkansas, is joining Rep. Jim
Moran, a Democrat from Northern Virginia, to introduce a bill creating a
Privacy Commission. The idea behind the bill is that we need to have a
structured, thoughtful and comprehensive approach to privacy concerns,
rather than a hodge-podge of bills being shotgunned through Congress as this
issue escalates in the polls. The commission would be bipartisan and study
privacy concerns from all angles -- Internet, health records, financial
records, govt records, etc -- for 18 months and then submit a plan that
outlines the problems and recommends solutions. At this time, all possible
solutions are on the table -- from new legislation to the greater support
for self-regulation. The goal of the commission would be to bring everyone
to the table and find a good solution so that all interests are
well-respected.

Hutchinson and Moran, along with other members of Congress, will introduce
the bill at a news conference tomorrow (Wednesday, March 15) at 11 a.m. in
the Government Reform Committee Room (2203 Rayburn).
