FC: Congress assails vice: Gambling and morphed and real child porn

WASHINGTON -- A Congressional panel appears ready to grant police greater wiretapping authority in cases involving child pornography in both printed and electronic form.

The House Judiciary Crime Subcommittee held a hearing Thursday on a bill, H.R.3484, which expands the investigative power of federal, state, and local authorities.

Current U.S. law lists dozens of crimes, including drug offenses, murder, kidnapping, gambling, and bribery, where wiretaps are permissible. The Child Sex Crimes Wiretapping Act would add another offense "relating to material constituting or containing child pornography" to the list.

GOP Wants No Net Bets

WASHINGTON -- House Republicans, bowing to pressure from conservative groups, agreed to propose a ban on nearly all forms of Internet gambling.

The draconian proposal, scheduled for a floor vote next week, is the result of closed-door negotiations between GOP leaders and special interest groups that claim an earlier version of the bill does not go far enough.

"It's about time Congress acts to curb this dangerous and rapidly expanding activity. Online gambling is much more destructive and addictive than other forms of gambling; it provides high-speed instant gratification together with the anonymity of the home," said Janet Parshall, spokeswoman for the Family Research Council in Washington.
