                     Nuke Opponents Fear Y2K Worst

If you have any doubt that Y2K has lost
its ability to inspire public panic, consider
this week's protest in front of the White
                     House.

It had everything going for it: A catchy
                     shut-down-nuke-plants theme, foreign
visitors imported for the event, and a
                     letter to President Clinton demanding
                     prompt action.

The only thing it lacked was, well,
protesters. Just seven people showed up,
and that's counting two peace activists
living in Lafayette Park who decided to
                     rally to this cause, too.

                     Social Security Secure for Y2K
                     by Declan McCullagh

                     2:05 p.m. 21.Dec.1999 PST
WASHINGTON -- Federal officials say the
Social Security system is Y2K-OK, and
                     they're probably right.

The most recent figures show that all of
the agency's 2203 computer systems are
Y2K compliant, and many have been for
                     years.

But just in case -- there's a lot of that
if/then planning going on right about now
-- the Social Security Administration is
readying a 24-hour command center at
                     its Baltimore, Maryland headquarters.

Rudy G. Says NYC Is A-OK
                     by Jill Priluck

                     3:00 p.m. 21.Dec.1999 PST
NEW YORK -- New Yorkers can expect a
"smooth transition" when it comes to Y2K,
                     mayor Rudolph Giuliani announced
                     Tuesday.

The mayor declared in an afternoon press
conference at City Hall that New York
City is well prepared for the
                     much-anticipated calendar rollover
occurring in less than two weeks.
