Date: Fri, 10 Dec 1999 15:42:50 -0500 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2448.0) Declan -- The politech list might find the following information of interest. On Sunday afternoon, 3:00 CST, Iowa Citizens for a Sound Economy will host a media availability in Des Moines. The first item of interest will be the release of a report by the Progress & Freedom Foundation that details the opinions of adult Iowans on the Internet, its role in their lives and public policy. Frank Luntz will be on hand to explain the results of his recent survey work in the state. In addition, state representative Jamie Van Fossen will be the first elected official to sign a Declaration of E-Freedom. The E-Freedom coalition -- which I believe that you you have reported on in the past -- as well as CSE, PFF, the Internet Freedom Project (Iowa-based group), ATR and an assorted cast of other characters will call upon candidates for public office to sign the Declaration. Grover Norquist will be on hand to provide his perspective on the issue as he makes his way to San Francisco for the next meeting of the Advisory Commission on Electronic Commerce. And per our previous conversations, Iowa CSE will be there in full force for the candidate debate on Monday to make sure that the candidates understand the issue clearly. That should be a lot of fun. Give me a holler if you have questions. The text of the Declaration is as follows: The E-Freedom Declaration Whereas, the Internet is creating jobs, economic growth, prosperity and new opportunities for all Americans, and Whereas, taxation of Internet sales, Internet access and telecommunications services inhibits growth and slows the spread of Internet access across America; Therefore, I ___________, hereby declare that, if elected to the office of_____________, I will support making permanent the current ban on Internet access, sales or use taxes, and will work to reduce and ultimate eliminate discriminatory taxation of telecommunications services.
