You probably know this, but I thought I'd mention it (and yes, I'd recommend nix over Windows for this stuff anyway). 
Make sure you "unthrottle" your Windows XP TCP connections. This feature greatly affects things we do with scans and 
such, but many normal users never notice the difference.
